2009 Heroes of Health Event

The Healthiest State Campaign held its annual Heroes of Health event on November 12th, 2009 at the Seattle Aquarium. The Heroes of Health Awards honor the people, places and organizations that reflect the healthy values that make up the cornerstones of our Healthiest State in the Nation Campaign.

This year’s winners along with the videos shown at the event are below:

Healthy Living Award Community of Bridgeport

This year’s Healthy Living Award went to the Community of Bridgeport in rural Eastern Washington. This award highlights how personal responsibility can lead to better health and Bridgeport exemplifies that quality. Despite the challenges of living in a small, diverse, resource-challenged rural community, the people of Bridgeport have made huge strides in making themselves healthy. They enlisted local educators, business leaders, public agencies, students and their parents, state legislators, public and private funders (including the Washington Health Foundation) to nurture new leaders and create unprecedented job opportunities, academic achievement and improved community health.

Healthy Systems Award MultiCare Health Systems

The Healthy Systems Award honored MultiCare Health Systems. This award looks at how collective responsibility is changing health for the better. Led by President & CEO Diane Cecchettini, MultiCare has developed a Center For Healthy Living to bring opportunities for health improvement in greater Pierce County through increased physical activity, better nutrition and other key health needs. It is also working to improve the amount of proven preventive care provided in the area, as part of the Healthiest State Campaign’s Prevention Initiative.

Lifetime Achievement Award Attorney General Rob McKenna

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna. The Lifetime Achievement Award encompasses work that represents both personal and collective responsibility. McKenna has been a leader in extending health to individuals and healthy living through his commitment to identity theft and his fight against methamphetamines. He is also working with the Healthiest State Campaign to develop a Health Home for every Washingtonian. A Health Home is designed to help you take more control over your own health care—helping you to become the most informed member of your own health care team. Examples include having a central location for all your health records and health and wellness resources and information.
