Newborn blood screen
Thyroid dysfunction (hypothyroidism)
Hypothyroidism:If not detected in time will slow growth and brain development.
PKU (Phenylketonuria)
PKU:Infants are unable to process amino acid phenylalanine (found in most foods) results in build up causing brain damage and mental retardation.
Adrenal (Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia-CAH)
Adrenal CAH:Affects genital development and can disturb kidney function and cause death.
Hemoglobin (sickle cell and others)
Sickle Cell Anemia: Thyroid dysfunction (hypothyroidism)
Galactosemia
Galactosemia: Cannot convert galactose (from milk) into glucose (the body’s main source of fuel) therefore can cause death, blindness or mental retardation in infancy if not identified.
Biotidinase deficiency
Biotidinase deficiency: Biotin deficiency-without Biotin 4 enzymes that are necessary for normal metabolism cannot function properly.
Homocysteinuria
Homocysteinuria: Nearsightedness, dislocation of lens of eye, delayed development, failure to thrive, possible mental retardation.
Cystic fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis:Results in production of thick sticky fluid that builds up in the breathing passages of the lungs and pancreas causing life threatening lung infections and serious digestion problems.
Medium chain acyl-coA dehydrogenase deficiency
Medium chain acyl-coA dehydrogenase deficiency: Prevents the body from converting certain fats to energy particularly in fasting states. Can cause vomiting, lack of energy, low blood sugar, seizures, breathing difficulty, liver problems, cardiac arrest, brain damage, coma and sudden death.
DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Acellular Pertussis) Diphtheria
Diphtheria: Can result in damage to heart, kidney, and nerves, paralysis, & respiratory problems.1 person in 10 with Diphtheria will die from it.
Tetanus
Tetanus: Can cause severe muscle spasms that make it hard to breathe & heart problems. Tetanus happens when the tetanus bacteria infects a wound. About 6 people in 10 with Tetanus will die from it.
Acellular Pertussis
Pertussis: Also known as Whooping Cough-can result in severe coughing making it difficult to drink, eat, & breathe. Can also cause convulsions, brain damage and death-very young children area at the highest risk.
Tdap: used as a booster needed by adolescents and adults Diphtheria
Diphtheria: Can result in damage to heart, kidney, and nerves, paralysis, & respiratory problems.

IPV Polio
Polio: Causes severe crippling. One in 10 infected with Polio will die.
MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) Measles
Measles: Can cause fever, rash, convulsions, respiratory problems, deafness and blindness, brain damage & death
Mumps
Mumps: Causes fever, swelling of glands in throat (neck and jaw), deafness, brain damage, meningitis & sterility in males
Rubella-German Measles
Rubella: Usually mild in children but very easy to catch. Can cause fever, rash, miscarriage or birth defects in a pregnant woman
MCV4 Meningitis
Meningitis: Infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Also causes blood infections.
PCV7 Pneumococcal bacteria
Pneumococcal bacteria: Can cause meningitis, blood infections, pneumonia, ear infections and can lead to death.
Varicella Chickenpox
Chickenpox: Can cause rash, fever, skin infections, pneumonia, and swelling of the brain.
