even accidental injuries can be prevented if we take appropriate steps to protect
ourselves. If we do develop an illness, we can live much longer, healthier lives
if we make appropriate use of the medical and social support we need to manage the

WHF believes that healthy communities, investments in prevention and high value
medical and public health systems lay indispensable groundwork for protecting against
injury and disease. But we will not know how healthy Washington is unless we know
how we use those systems. Consequently, WHF has chosen the above two measures we
feel are sentinel for knowing the extent to which Washingtonians are availing themselves
of opportunities to avoid injury and disease.
